Non-pollutant capsosiphon fulvescens(literally maesaeng-i in Korean), a green alga, has encountered makkuli(milk-colored fermented sweet rice wine). Recently the Busan-based N-ZONE CO., LTD., a Korean seaweed exporter, released makkuli products made with maesaeng-i extract under the brand name 'Maesaeng-I Cheong-Tak' onto the market.

Maesaeng-i, a kind of seaweed, which grows in the winter period running from December to February, is a speciality of South Jeolla Province. It can only grow in the tranquil currents of the cleanest sea of the coastal areas. This green alga also has tough frowing condition since it is vulnerable to the natural environment. If pollutants flow into the growing areas, the algae will be badly affected.

The green alga exporter developed makkuli using maesaeng-i in order to create a new type of traditional liquor that is good for the health as well as being an attractive alcoholic beverage. According to the company, Maesaeng-I Cheong-Tak is rich in protein and amino acids and produces organic acids with a sour flavor that stimulate the metabolism of the body. One of the striking features of the product is that it uses ground water drawn from depths greater than 250 meters. The living yeasts found in the product help improve constipation by activating the excretory function of the large intestines.

The company said: "No artificial addictives are found in the product. Owing to our hygienic facilities, it can manufacture bacteria-free makkuli products. So those who drink it don't have to worry about a hangover or gastro discomfort or pain the next day."

Kim, Young-Jin, CEO of the company, remarted: "Our company has received the patented rights for our product and it is now poised to export Maesaeng-I CHeong-Tak makkuli to overseas markets. It is expecially targeted at young female consumers thanks to its light and tender after-flavor." Currently it is shipping out some samples to Japan and the U.S.
